Under the stewardship of Chair city Ahmedabad, the U20 reaffirmed the all-encompassing impact of cities on humanity in the 21st century. The communique provides a roadmap for global change through targeted recommendations to create inclusive and sustainable cities.īuilding on the recommendations of previous communiques, it underscored the need to bridge the increasing contradictions faced by cities, particularly in the Global South, which are emerging as vibrant engines of economic growth. Endorsed by a record 105 cities across the globe, the communique is anchored in the aspiration of 'moving from intent to action' - a philosophy that the Hon'ble Prime Minister has put into practice in our urban development schemes.

The communique codified the collaborative spirit of action that was demonstrated throughout this year. It was a serendipitous coincidence, indeed, that the final event of the U20 cycle this year, the Mayoral Summit, took place in the land of Mahatma Gandhi, a pioneer of the zero-carbon lifestyle.Īt the summit, the U20 Communique for 2023 was handed over to the G20 Chair. Our urban transport policies are designed to fulfil the commitments of the Paris Agreement. Our metro network is now the fifth-largest in the world. We have provided tap water and sewer connections to more than 10 crore families. We have housed more than 1 crore families. Various transformative urban missions have resulted in Indian cities poised to help the country achieve its economic and SDG targets.

In the last nine years, the Modi government has undertaken the largest planned urbanisation programme in the world based on universalisation and saturation of basic services technological innovation and economic opportunity.
